Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency hosts videos, commentaries and analysis of portrayals in popular cultures. She also serves as the director of operations. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of people in the online world. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she's given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age, Sarkeesian was fascinated with gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to start a web-based series examining gender-based representations in video games. She found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. This attack was not enough to deter her. It actually made her more committed to being a feminist and a media critique. Her many notable contributions in the feminist field are recognized with numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of media and founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
